Opening Session of 7th RRPG International Conference. UTM Skudai-Malaysia, 15 August 2016

On last 15-17 August 2016, RRPG had held the 7th International Conference that presented 7 keynotes speakers and more 120 papers presented in parallel sessions. The paper presentations and discussions had covered the five themes: rural development and planning approach, rural technology, resilient and disaster risk reduction, and rural governance, addressing the issues of inclusive rural development and transformation in the challenging environment.

It is good to see that the papers are of the multi-disciplinary in nature but with focus on rural areas. The papers were from the school of geography, economics, agriculture, health science, research institutes, policy making agencies and planning. Mixture of those which enhance our understanding of rural situation and rural development practices. Many from planning background; planning discourses that link knowledge to action seems interest more to the policy makers.

There were some of the ideas from the conference i.e. rural rejuvenation vs transformation (Chief Minister); vulnerability vs precarity (Jonathan Rigg); cluster concepts in eco-tourism (prof Amran), one person one product (OPOP), one village one product (OVOP) and one village one cooperative (OVOC) (Prof. Suratman); Sustainable Development Goals (Global Development agenda for 2030); sustainable rural tourism through Subak- the traditional system of organization related to management of rice cultivation and irrigation system + spiritual practices (Dr. Sukamerta), issue of accessibility to internet in rural areas (Prof Suriati). Partnership programmes to rejuvenate rice terrace in Japan (Prof Yamaji) , on line businesses for young entrepreneurs and many other ideas and experiences discussed in parallel sessions.

The next 8th RRPG International Conference will be held in Jogjakarta that will be hosted by Gadjah Mada University (UGM). (adapted from closing speech of 7th RRPG Conference Chairman, Prof Ibrahim Ngah)

  About RRPG7

We are facing the challenge of uncertainty of economic growth, increased globalization process, political conflicts and climate change that the questions of sustainability, and inclusivity of development becoming more pressing. The new global development agenda and Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) also call for more commitment for inclusive development. However, given the need to foster economic growth and competitiveness, concentration of development in core regions seems to be a common strategy adopted by many governments in developing countries, the outcome would further increase the development gap in rural areas. In the context of  the various challenges facing the world today we would like to call upon scholars and practitioners to look into how  rural development  could  incorporate inclusive and sustainable communities that synergize and balance between rural and urban areas as well as achieving sustainable development, poverty eradication and resilient community.

The aim of the conference was to bring together stakeholders, policy makers, prominent figure, leading academic scientists, researchers and the public to explicitly discuss and advance our understanding of the following issues related to rural transformation, inclusive rural development and resilience rural environment. This conference will feature leading figures in various fields involving sustainable rural development, community empowerment, local economic development and community-based disaster risk reduction as well as resilience rural community studies.
